Lyrics
The Wolf Got By
Oh no, I let the wolf get by
With a wink and a knowing smile
Now it’s inside
Dressed up in soft clothes
Waiting for our eyes to close
Then it runs wild
Now this town has a torn-down feeling
All the ladies and all the babies are gone
Stripped down we don’t make a sound
All the preachers and all the speeches are gone
Too late to close the gate
The sickness travels through the air and it was already here
Take it back, I want to take it back
Take back the money, take back the fame
Take back everything
With a wink and a knowing smile
I let the wolf get by
Now it’s inside
HCIHBTLY
Rest in my arms my darling
And you will know that I love you
Stay long enough in my arms and you will see
That is where you belong
We ran for our lives
In parallel lines
Never crossing paths by chance
Then heaven steered us with a steady hand
And joined our shaking hands together
How could I help but to love you
Could a bird spend its life on the ground
Could a wolf greet the moon without a sound
I tried to run but my heart was heavy as lead
How could I help but to love you
Now tell me true is your heart blue
The same color your eyes reflect on mine
The same color the ocean shares with the sky
You and I belong together
I tried to run but my heart was heavy as lead
How could I help but to love you
How could I help but to love you
Myth On Wheels
The first time she sat behind that wheel she knew
This car would take her far into the center of it all
The first time she hit a hundred on that highway she knew
Those wheels were turning like four burning eyes staring at the sun
Everything inside her head was clay
The dogs of change will drag her heart away
Streets rolled back and in her tracks dreams were laid in black
Each time that trouble knocked upon her head she stuffed it in the trunk and fled
Everything she left behind is grey
The pictures in that rear-view mirror fade away
The windows on that Oldsmobile are fogging fast
Her tribe is headed west at last
A road sign in the distance tells a story of the past
A myth on wheels in a maze
In a candy store blown open by a friend
The headlights guide her way like crystal eyes
The last time she passed through this town her wheels never touched the ground
This time she saw a ghost by the side of the road, her heart and engine froze
The ghost was a man she laid to rest back in Pinecrest, he was flagging her down
She said I must be drunk, ‘cause in the trunk are all the men and memories I left behind
Everything she left behind is grey
The pictures in that rear-view mirror fade away
She stepped from the car but the ground never seemed so far away
She and that ghost took flight into the desert night, and the road will never be the same
Everything inside her head was clay
The dogs of change will drag her heart away
Paradise
Fire inside but not inspired
Nothing to say as the day burns away
Sit, wait, listen
You’ll hear a secret, one little word
It sneaks its way into the room
And it’s heard, through the discord
Clear as a tear on the floor of a white room
An loud, it’s LOUD
Fills up the void
Oh dear mother why?
Did it take so long to fly
To Paradise
Why did it take so long to make it through that night
Child inside, she wants to hide
Feathers and gold, she’ll never grow old
All eyes are paralyzed, when she enters the room
The impending doom is a coat that we all wear
Fits right tonight, by morning the threads will be frayed
And worn, cut loose from their form
We tried all night to say it right
First bells and chimes, everything rhymed
Alas, the poor child, she had to fly
Out to the deck, then a delicate neck
Was broken by the weight
Of a heart filled tight with wine and candle light
Too much to bear, life seemed better down there
Beautiful Dying Eyes
I fell into the light with nothing to guide me
And I was lost… lost in your blindness
Fell into a coma just getting to know you
It took a long… a long time to see
I was willing to die, willing to die
For a chance to find the true love behind those eyes
I was willing to die, this hell is on fire
With the lights that shine, from beautiful dying eyes
They were love in disguise
Dakota tornadoes twist hearts together into one
Lonesome times two
The sirens of summer calling me back home
It took a long time to get home
Held up to the morning light
I was thin and you could see right through behind me
Two thousand miles in between
One heart a desert, one heart a sea
Red River
Does the Red River run wild on Mars
Or is it deep in this flesh of ours
While others search the oceans blue
I have found the true color in you
Will she let her long hair down
Sweep me in her current
Bathe me in her healing clay
Red River take me away
I hear voices in the gentle wind
They long for the days when we were young
Dancing freely as the Dixie band plays
A tune called Red River Take Me Away
Red river take me away
To when the phonograph played
A haunting melody on her ancient shore
The bittersweet sound that I long for
There’s a riverboat captain with a Southern drawl
White-laced ladies spinning parasols
Hoping in some old-fashioned way
For a Red River man to whisk them away
Banjo Jim skips happily by
All the passengers wave and choke down a sigh
For memories of days gone by
And the sway of the river makes them cry
Wishes in the Well
There are wishes down in the well
That we promised not to tell
Til we’re old
And our stories can be told
There are pieces of this life
That we’re cut out with a knife
For a picture or a painting
But the eyes have all been waiting
For the tears that never come
For all the work undone
The poets will cry
While their precious children die
Because the shallow words of man can not describe
There are flowers on the ground
But their roots will not be found
For ten feet or a mile
We’ve been digging for a while
There is nothing on the wall
But a push to help us fall
In the right way, on the right side
With a face that can not hide
All the tears that never fall
From the old clouds in us all
As the song fades away
We’ll beg it to stay
But the sweet melody has nothing to say
